Background of the study

Family is the first place of association in a ma’s life and the family has a greater influence in the life of a person. The formation of the grassroot level of the society starts with the family and the small form of government is the family. Family consist of a father, mother and their children or a group of people related by blood or marriage.

The role of the family is numerous and most times family had always been used as an effective tool in curbing so many invents in the society.

Family counselling is an assistance given to a family especially from a professional in the resolution of personal difficulties. Due to rate at which divorce level is soaring daily above expectations in the society, it has been expedient for the method of family counselling to be applied in order to reducing this issue.

Family counselling is a branch of psychotherapy that works with families and couples in intimate relationships to nurture change and development. It tends to view change in terms of the systems of interaction between family members. The divorce tendency starts with the inability of the parties involved to nurture the intimate and mutual relationship between them and thus, unbeneficial changes occurs which tends to expand the weakness which has been caused by the drifting apart of the partners and hence, deepens the agitation and this tears down the marriage and family completely and leads to dissolution.

So with this, the need for family counselling which helps build up the relationship, draws the parties attention to harmful development which can serve as a threat to their marriage and rebuilds the family and the helps reduce the pending divorce thereby decreases the divorce rate by so certain percentage.

1.2       Statement of the problem

The rate of divorce in recent times which is caused by the society structure where the family (parties involved) drift apart due to the society demand to meet some basic needs. Thus, the place of family counselling plays in to bring families back to the point of intimate and draws the attentions of the parties involved to the dangers of decline in communication amongst couples thus reducing the rate of divorce by some percentage.
